Acidum Nitricum, from nitric acid, is defined by splinter-like pains at muco-cutaneous junctions, intensely offensive discharges, and a deep unforgiving quality. Farrington, Clarke, and Allen all give it prominent coverage for ulceration, fissures, and the sycotic-syphilitic constitution.

What Is Acidum Nitricum?

Acidum Nitricum is a homeopathic remedy prepared from nitric acid (HNO₃), a strong mineral acid with powerful corrosive and oxidising properties. The remedy is one of the most fully developed in the materia medica, with detailed coverage in Farrington's Clinical Materia Medica, Clarke's Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica, and Allen's Keynotes and Characteristics. It has deep constitutional action and is particularly suited to the sycotic-syphilitic miasmatic background.

Key Characteristics

  • Splinter-like or sticking pains — as if a sharp stick were lodged in the affected part
  • Ulceration at muco-cutaneous junctions: corners of the mouth, anus, nostrils, and genitalia
  • Intensely offensive, foul-smelling discharges from any orifice or wound
  • Condylomata (warts) — moist, cauliflower-like, bleeding easily on contact
  • Fissures in the anus with intense, lasting pain after defaecation
  • A pronounced unforgiving quality — the patient holds grudges and cannot let go of slights

Mental Picture

Farrington and Allen both describe the characteristic psychological profile: anxiety about health, deep irritability, and a pronounced unforgiving nature. The patient remembers offences with great tenacity and cannot release resentment. There is often anxiety about death and a hopeless quality regarding recovery. Clarke notes the hypersensitivity to noise, pain, and jarring, which mirrors the physical splinter sensation throughout.

Physical Picture

The most distinctive physical keynote is the splinter or sticking pain — experienced at the site of ulcers, fissures, warts, or any inflamed mucous surface. Anal fissures with this pain quality, lasting long after defaecation, are a hallmark indication. Discharges are always intensely offensive. Warts bleed easily and may be broad and moist. Allen notes that the urine may smell strongly offensive, like horse urine, and that haemorrhoids may also show the characteristic splinter pain.

When Is It Considered?

Homeopaths may consider Acidum Nitricum when:

  • Splinter-like pains occur at muco-cutaneous junctions — anus, mouth corners, genitalia
  • Anal fissures cause intense, prolonged sticking pain after defaecation
  • Discharges from any orifice or wound are intensely offensive and foul-smelling
  • Condylomata or moist warts that bleed easily are present
  • The patient is deeply unforgiving, holds grudges, and has anxiety about health
